Ingredients

Pretzel Dough

  • 1.5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 0.625 cup warm water (100-110°F)

Boiling Solution

  • 6 cups water
  • 0.5 cup baking soda

Egg Wash and Toppings

  • 1 large egg beaten
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 1 tablespoon flaky sea salt or pretzel salt, for topping

Instructions

Make the Pretzel Dough

  • In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, yeast, sugar, and salt.
  • Gradually add the warm water and mix until a shaggy dough forms. Turn out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  • Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for 30 minutes, or until slightly puffed.

Shape and Boil the Pretzel Bites

  • While the dough is rising, prepare the boiling solution. In a large pot or Dutch oven, combine the 6 cups of water and baking soda. Bring to a boil.
  • Punch down the dough and divide it into 16 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a rope about 6 inches long and cut into 1-inch pieces.
  • Carefully drop a few pretzel bites into the boiling baking soda solution at a time, and boil for 30-60 seconds per side. Remove with a slotted spoon and place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

Air Fry and Serve

  • Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C).
  • In a small bowl, whisk together the beaten egg and 2 tablespoons of water to make an egg wash.
  • Brush the boiled pretzel bites with the egg wash and sprinkle generously with flaky sea salt.
  • Place the pretzel bites in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Cook for 5-7 minutes, or until golden brown and puffed.
  • Serve immediately with your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

Dipping sauce suggestions include cheese sauce, mustard, or a sweet cream cheese dip.
